“Korston” hotel demolition for the Yandex headquarters construction.

The building of the Corston Hotel, originally called “Orlenok”, was erected in 1976 on the eve of the 1980 Summer Olympics. In 2018, the building was bought by Yandex for the construction of its headquarters. The developer of the new construction is the MR Group.

GK Crushmash has carried out work on demolition of the 20-story hotel building. To perform the work on site, Crushmash used combined method: lowering the height with two tower cranes and builder’s small powered plants, and the lower levels were demolished with the excavators. At the site was used the equipment of GR Crushmash, including 5 tracked excavators, as well as a unique and the largest CAT-390 demolition-excavator in Russia with an arrow reach of up to 60 meters.

The project uses the technology of “smart demolition”, which assumes a sequential demolition of the building and the maximum percentage of recycling of construction waste into a secondary resource. The work was carried out in accordance with the BREEAM standard.

During the demolition works, the following measures were carried out:

1. Elementwise demolition by waste groups: glass, ceramic material, rubberoid, linoleum, plastics, insulant and etc.
2. Sorting of demolition waste into groups, separate collection and removal for processing.
3. Within the framework of the project, 90% of the 81,250 tons of generated construction waste was recycled
4. The use of secondary resources for the construction of temporary infrastructure
5. Noise reduction works
6. Dust suppression system. At this project, dust suppression work was provided by the constant operation of two powerful guns, similar to those used on ski slopes.
7. Moderate water consumption and strict control of water consumption at the facility.
